Alzheimer’s disease is a neurological disease named by Dr. Alois Alzheimer who had a case of a woman suffering from an unusual mental disease. After examining the woman’s corpse when she passed away, he noticed alternations in the brain tissue, which were probably responsible for the symptoms she experienced (unpredictable behavior, memory loss, language problems). After studying the unusual clumps and fibers, Dr. Alzheimer concluded that they were indeed responsible for the disease, which is named in his honor.
Alzheimer’s disease is the 6th leading cause of death in the USA, although some recent research ranks it 3rd, behind heart disease and cancer. Alzheimer’s is the main cause of dementia, a mental condition which is characterized by loss of memory and reasoning impairment.
Coconut oil research
According to a 2004 study, coconut oil can improve the memory and many cognitive functions. The study examined 20 Alzheimer’s patients that were divided into 2 groups which received either a placebo or some coconut oil. The coconut oil group had higher levels of hydroxybutyrate beta (OHB) in the body, which is an important ketone. All the patients fasted before the blood testing. They were given 40 ml. coconut oil or a placebo afterwards and they fasted again. The final results concluded that coconut oil is indeed effective against Alzheimer’s disease, although further research is required in order to solidify the results.
According to Dr. Mercola and Dr. David Perlmutter, avoiding the consumption of healthy fats and consuming a lot of carbs is the main culprit for Alzheimer’s disease. Both of them agree that fasting and consuming coconut oil can boost the glycogen in the liver and remove excess fat from the body, which results in improved brain health and promotes weight loss.
